3 months - lecture phase
In a School of Worship you achieve a biblical foundation of what worship is, what is contains, what is means, what does it do, and how it works.
The lecture phase has taught me so many different aspects to what worship is. During the school the speakers brought up questions like...
What is worship?
What is worship in the bible?
Is mowing your lawn worship?
What is Praise?
Do we need music to worship?
Is there a specific time to worship?
Questions like these baffled my mind, i’ve never been asked these questions before and never even thought about the answers. Now i have the answers and it has blown my mind at the knowledge that comes from these questions.
Weeks
Week 1 - Nature and character of God - Jon Justine
This week really inspired me to read the bible get a good foundation and understanding of who God is, and what is character is like. God created us to have a relationship with us, and to love us. God is our creator, so when he was creating the earth, he didn’t have to make everything look so wonderful and pretty and complex, we wouldn’t know any different, also he could of created the earth in a second but he took 6 DAYS to create our home because he loved us so much!
Week 2 - Worship and the bible - Kevin Norris
This week really blew my mind in Kevin just asking one simple question to the class... What is worship? We spent the whole morning trying to figure out ourselves what it is, and we couldnt figure it out. So kevin taught us that Worship is Shachah (Hebrew, means to serve) and Proskuneo (Greek, To kiss, like a dog licking his masters hand) and that blew my mind. We also can come up with our own definition of worship, as mine is... “To express your love to God in a wholesome and true way.”
Week 3 - Worship and prayer - Kirsti Wilke
This week kinda confused me, because last week we had Kevin who told us that worship is a specific thing, and Kristi told us that worship is everything (romans 12:1) living a lifestyle worship. So i came to one conclusion about both of the weeks. When we serve God it is a form of worship, (shachah) so i believe that regardless if we are in a church standing with our arms lifted high, singing “our God is greater, our God is healer,” or on our knees in a bathroom scrubbing a toilet, that if we are proclaiming that what we are doing is serving God, then i believe it is worship.
Week 4 - Song Writing - Sean Paul
I LOVED this week, this was probably my favorite week. I'm not very good at guitar, but this week really taught me to learn my instrument and use it to the best of my ability. Sean also taught me basic principles of song writing, and of all the years that he's been song writing he actually taught us practical stuff that appeals to the audience, just general audience. He also taught me that i need to find another song writer in my life that will just tell me if what wright sucks or not, but then tell me how i can fix it.
Week 5 - Jeff Ling - Worship and the Church
I hated this week, but then again i loved it because this was the most challenging week of all the weeks in the lecture phase. I personally did not like how Jeff Ling taught, but he really challenged me in my way of thinking. He asked us a simple question that totally blew my mind and just made me completely angry... "Where does it say in the bible that we are allowed to use instruments for worship?" That question wrecked me, but he taught us that we don't need instruments, songs, any kind of music to worship God, and i thank him for that.
Week 6 - Musicianship - Sandy Hoffman
This week was very interesting, and i highly enjoyed it. Sandy taught us about worship teams, and how to put them together, handle them, work them, and just all around lead a worship team. It was very inspiring and enlightening, i liked it. One thing i will take away from this week is that as worship leaders, we grow in our musicianship not to distract people from worship, but to bridge the gap to the presence of God stronger.
Week 7 - Creativity in Worship - Aaron Sternke
This week was very fun and i enjoyed working with Aaron, and his friend Abraham that he brought to help him teach. Aaron taught me that worship doesn't have to be a specific thing, or act, or event. It can be so many different things, along with creativity. He also taught me to incorporate so many different things into a worship time; dance, songs, art, Lectio Devina (reading out loud the word), and many many other things that go into worship. He also taught me to always be sensitive to the best story of all time, the story of Jesus sacrifice.
Week 8 - Freedom in Worship - Randy Picarro
We were supposed to be learning about freedom in worship, and we did learn about that a little bit, but the main topic we actually talked about, and that Randy taught about is, prophecy and moving in the gift of prophecy, and ministering in the gift of prophecy. He taught how to use it, and quick simple steps to grow in it. Also he taught us how to be in the presence of God without any bridges, we make our own bridge to the presence of God.
Week 9 - Teaching - Sarah Morrison
I went into this week thinking that i honestly wasn't going to learn anything, but i was for surely wrong. Sarah really taught me that teaching can be a gift from God, and that it take practice it is definitely nothing to be learned over night. She taught me simple principles to teaching, how to grasp your audience, be aware of your surroundings, know your audience... and so much more. I did not realize how much actually goes into teaching until this week.
Week 10 - Prophecy - Chris McCalmon
This week was fun, we got another week on prophecy, and was taught more practical steps to using our gifts to our fullest extent. There's not much i can talk about this week except that we just practiced prophecy over each other and got tons of words, and visions for each other, it was tons of fun, and i feel confident in my gift of prophecy.
Week 11 - Servant Leadership - Dawn Masuchi
I loved this week, I loved Dawn teaching, she really worked hard on teaching us that servant leadership is so crucial to leading, and it has been proven that it is one of the best ways to lead ever found. We also had a chance to take the Myers Brigs' personality test, and as the test said, i was an extreme extravert, intuitive thinker, feeler with natural thinking tendencies, and a perceptive functional person, i kinda didn't like because i just don't like a test telling me what type of person i am. Overall this week was an eye opener, and She taught us that we need to serve the people who are under us, but always take control of situations when it calls for it.
Week 12 - Passion for Jesus - Nick Gouph
And again another week on prophecy, now i know that God really wanted us as a team to fully understand the gift of prophecy and what it can do for our ministries. Nick talked really fast so there was times where i couldn't understand him and i kinda shut down, but i still learned a ton! He mainly taught us to be crumb eaters for christ, as in its doesn't matter where you are in life you always need to look to Jesus and strive for his strength. He also gave us more knowledge on the gift of prophecy.
The Lecture phase gave me a strong understanding of what worship is, teaching, servant leadership creativity, musicianship, prophecy, the gifts of the holy spirit... and so much more.
